Shhhhhh! I’m just a guy who knows people who know people. Also, I make it a point to remember where people live even if I can’t remember their name. Wait that doesn’t quite sound right…. either way, I think you know what I mean.
I couldn’t agree more. In the few years we haven’t gone to Cleveland to see my family (Fiona’s family is British), we’ve either had people over or gone to someone’s house for Thanksgiving. It’s important to remember that not everyone gets to spend the holiday with family.
To talk to my dad, who at 66 is still more liberal and empathetic, rational, and caring about his fellow Americans than a bunch of other dipshit former hippie liberals (you know they protested the war and claimed they went to Woodstock) he grew up with that decided to blame Generation X for all their problems because they were too “free” to take care of their own children, build roads, pay for education or actually do anything about what they protested for in the Sixties.
Once it came time to do any actual work, they were too busy worrying about their stock portfolio and dividends to put in the effort to keep their country great. People talk about how great the Sixties were for change within the country but the reality is that as soon as it was time to duck out of the limelight and do some real work, the baby boomers were too interested in getting divorced and buying a matching track suit with some new mate than actually doing anything worthwhile. Sure, the push for equal rights was amazing, but when you stopped at busing it must have been because anything else was too much effort.
Historically speaking, I don’t think you can find a generation more full of shit.
I’m a flaming liberal, but if you introduce yourself as a Sixties liberal, you can go fuck off and come back when you can actually stick with something you care about. Until then, you can go back to arguing perspective and policy and pander to votes in your PTA, Country Club or Congressional District with your fellow boomers and not do anything that actually helps to get this country out of the slump its mired in. I’m glad were are coming on seven decades of making you feel special. I hope it has been worth it.
