Now that I’ve had a beer and a wonderful dinner cooked by The Wife, I think it is time to explain why I got the red ass a little bit ago in a tweet that has stimulated a handful of DMs.
In the last week, I’ve unfollowed three mildly funny people for the simple reason that they link to their Favstar/New page every single day. Mildly funny isn’t meant to be an insult—just an observation. It isn’t like any of us are the next Badbanana, except Badbanana. A couple of times, I’d link over and immediately notice they had received more stars than they’d given. Since I don’t want to call anyone out that I don’t have a follow/ing relationship with, let’s just say it was about 2500 received to 500 given. This isn’t the BIO link, this is a Tweet that says, “HEY LOOK AT ME, I DON’T GIVE A RAT’S ASS ABOUT YOU, BUT LOOK AT ME ANYWAY.”
I get it, you really like the attention or you wouldn’t be on Twitter. It’s cool and all. But Christ, act with a little class. I am a fan of very VERY few people on Twitter, and I hope to God none of you are a fan of me. We are peers, and Twitter is a great equalizer in that regard. We mock celebrities who can’t spell or who are dull. We insult trolls and say really groovy things about each other on Fridays. Sometimes we argue. But that’s what makes this a community, and you support each other.
This isn’t about me wanting reciprocity for starring your tweets. I love stars but I have plenty. But you know how cool it is to have that 10th star on a tweet and make the rising board—you have a PEER that is looking for the same support.
So I went the whole 4 months I’ve been engaged in Favstar and if it wasn’t for people like @BeingTheo, @Shariv67, @MikeKane221, @Tymethief, @SnickyDog(and all her alias) and @CroweJam I probably wouldn’t have continued down the Favstar path. Now look at that group of people. All are class acts and none of them are posting tweets demanding we star their stuff.
The end point I am trying to make is there is 1 of me and 456 of you. If I am really engaged with the Twitter/Favstar community of course I should give more than I receive. That being said, I am not criticizing anyone how has received more stars than they’ve given, because I don’t see any of them begging for more.
I’ve spent enough time writing this, now back to reading your stuff.
